Padbury was built out through the 1970s and 80s, and most of its brick-and-tile homes were fitted with steel roller doors on carports and single garages. Forty-odd years on, those doors are still going — but the parts around them aren't. Salt air reaches Padbury on the sea breeze and quietly shortens the life of springs, cables, bottom brackets and roller stems — not as aggressively as on the beachfront, but enough that an annual service pays for itself by catching a corroding cable before it snaps and jams the door.
