Cable corroded through at a rusted bottom bracket; roller and bracket worn.

Solution

New galvanised cables, heavy-duty bottom brackets and rollers fitted both sides.

Result

New cables, brackets and rollers both sides — the door lifts freely and level again.

Customer Problem

The door on this Spearwood home was stuck fast — it wouldn't go up on the opener and was too heavy and lopsided to move by hand. The cause was a snapped lift cable: once one side lets go the door twists in the tracks and locks itself in place. Spearwood sits close enough to the coast that salt air quietly eats away at cables and brackets, and this one had corroded through right at the anchor.

  • Door stuck and unable to lift
  • Lift cable snapped at the bottom bracket anchor
  • Salt-air corrosion visible on the cable strands and bracket

Inspection & Diagnosis

The old bottom bracket came off with the frayed cable still attached — the strands had corroded and broken one by one at the anchor, and the roller stem and bracket were worn and rusted. The other side showed the same corrosion, so both cables and both brackets were replaced together rather than repairing one side and waiting for the other to fail.

  • Cable frayed and corroded through at the bracket anchor
  • Bottom bracket and roller rusted and worn
  • Opposite side corroded to a similar degree — replaced as a set
  • Springs, drums and tracks inspected — serviceable

Solution

With the door secured and springs de-tensioned we fitted new heavy-duty galvanised bottom brackets with new rollers, ran a matched pair of new galvanised cables to the drums, then squared and levelled the door, re-tensioned the springs and confirmed the balance. The opener's limits and safety reversal were re-set and everything lubricated.

  • New heavy-duty galvanised bottom brackets both sides
  • New nylon rollers on the bottom brackets
  • Matched pair of new galvanised lift cables
  • Door levelled, springs re-tensioned, opener limits and reversal re-set

Frequently Asked Questions

Salt-laden air settles on the cables and brackets and gets into the strands, and the bottom bracket — closest to the ground and often damp — corrodes first. In coastal suburbs like Spearwood, Coogee and Hamilton Hill we recommend a service every 12 months so worn cables are caught before they snap.
